Halsalm (1211 m)

Halsalm: duration 4 hours, ascent 430 m, descent 430 m,
We will start from the CVJM and follow the signs directly behind the building marking the trail to the Halsalm. We begin by hiking northwards along a steep forest path and will quickly start gaining altitude. There is only one slightly difficult section, but that can be managed using our hands to hold on. We turn left at the fork and continue towards a stream bed. From the streambed, we enjoy the beautiful view across the Klausbach valley to the Hochkalter massif. Further uphill the forest slowly thins out and we reach an open alpine pasturland, above which the striking Knittelhorn rises. After a total walking time of a good 1 ½ hours, we reach the Halsalm, an alpine chalet, where we will stop for a bite to eat. We leave the Halsalm and head in a south-westerly direction towards the Knittelhorn. We pass an information point describing the bearded vulture reintroduction project, where we will learn a lot about these fascinating birds. We reach the asphalt Klausbachstraße at the bottom of the valley, turn left and follow it back to Hintersee. On the way we pass the national park information point (approx. 1 ¼ hours from the Halsalm), which is well worth a visit.
